In response to China's abstention in a UN vote on Gaza on Monday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Tuesday that the US-drafted resolution is vague on key issues regarding Gaza's post-war arrangements and fails to fully reflect important principles such as "Palestinians governing Palestine" and the "two-state solution," which is inconsistent with China's consistent position. Therefore, China did not vote in favor.
The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on Monday that endorses a peace plan for Gaza put forward by the US and a temporary international force in the enclave following two years of war. The resolution received 13 votes in favor, and none against, with permanent members China and Russia abstaining, UN News reported on Monday.
Mao noted that China's permanent representative to the UN has clarified the country's position in the explanatory statement after the Security Council vote.
"China supports the Security Council in taking all necessary actions to promote a durable ceasefire, alleviate the humanitarian disaster, and launch post-war reconstruction in Gaza," Mao said.
However, the US-drafted resolution is vague on key issues regarding Gaza's post-war arrangements and fails to fully reflect important principles such as "Palestinians governing Palestine" and the "two-state solution," which is inconsistent with China's position. Therefore, China did not vote in favor, Mao said.
Mao stated that China will continue to adopt a constructive and responsible attitude, support the just cause of the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights, and make unremitting efforts to achieve a comprehensive, just and durable settlement of the Palestinian issue.
