On 12 November, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna met with Finnish Foreign Minister Elina Valtonen in Tallinn to discuss current foreign policy issues. Valtonen is also attending the concert ceremony marking the 107th anniversary of the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting focused on cooperation among Baltic Sea countries in the field of maritime security. "Estonia's position is that countries in our region must jointly contribute more and agree on rules concerning Baltic Sea security," said Tsahkna. "This was also one of the priorities of Estonia's presidency of the Council of the Baltic Sea States." Tsahkna also emphasised the need to strengthen the eastern flank.
The ministers discussed continued support for Ukraine and the urgent need to move forward with the use of Russia's frozen assets. "We must swiftly find a way within the European Union for Ukraine to access Russia's frozen assets," said Tsahkna. "It is also essential to make progress with the 20th sanctions package to ensure the cost of war for Russia continues to rise — consistently and painfully."
The ministers also addressed bilateral cooperation in the context of Estonia's upcoming presidency of the Nordic-Baltic region (NB8) next year, as well as preparations for the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference to be hosted by Estonia in 2027.
