UNRWA Situation Report #189 on the Humanitarian Crisis in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including East Jerusalem
UNRWA
26 Sep 2025
Highlights
The Gaza Strip
- UNRWA confirmed either direct or indirect strikes on 12 UNRWA premises in Gaza City, including nine schools and two health centres sheltering over 11,000 individuals, between 11 and 16 September. At least five Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) were injured. The UNRWA Gaza Field Office sustained further damage in an indirect strike.
- UNRWA activities in Gaza City have been significantly reduced due to the deteriorating security environment. UNRWA's only functioning health centre north of Wadi Gaza (Beach Camp) was forced to suspend operations on 13 September due to intensified attacks and damage incurred during the strikes.
- The massive destruction of civilian infrastructure, combined with severe disruptions to humanitarian operations and access constraints, is severely hindering the last remaining lifelines for civilians in Gaza City.
- On 16 September, the Independent International Commission of Inquiry concluded that the State of Israel has committed genocide. The Commission stated that Israel obstructed trusted aid agencies (including UNRWA) from bringing in essential and life-saving aid, for the purposes of bringing about the "physical destruction of the Palestinians in Gaza through unliveable conditions of life in the Gaza Strip".
- OCHA reported that about half of more than 246,800 displacement movements recorded since mid-August took place in the past week alone, with growing reports of displaced families sleeping on the streets or in makeshift tents and struggling to survive.
- About 28,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children under the age of five have been identified by nutrition partners in July and August, according to OCHA, exceeding the combined total of malnutrition cases identified in the first six months of 2025.
The occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem
- The Israeli Forces further tightened movement and access restrictions in the West Bank during this reporting period, including the installation of new road gates to control the movement of Palestinians in and out of communities across the area.
- Operation 'Iron Wall' continues, with residents of Tulkarm, Nur Shams, and Jenin camps in the northern West Bank unable to return to their homes.
- In the northern West Bank, the Israeli Forces imposed more restrictions and detained hundreds of Palestinians in Tulkarm city after an improvised explosive device (IED) was detonated on 11 September, reportedly injuring two members of the Israeli Forces.
