On 23 September, the Minister-designate of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, Kęstutis Budrys, met with Annalena Baerbock, President of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

During the meeting, the Minister and the UNGA President discussed the need to defend the principles of the UN Charter - sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the prohibition of the use of force - and the role of the UN in strengthening accountability for violations of international law, ensuring peace and security in the world.

"It is necessary to modernise the United Nations in order to make the organisation more effective and relevant in the current security and geopolitical situation. The UN Security Council is paralysed and cannot take action to condemn and prevent Russian aggression, as the aggressor, Russia, is its permanent member. The General Assembly must take the lead in the fight against the abuse of the veto power", said the Minister.
