Bern, 24.09.2025 -- At the opening of the General Debate at the UN in New York on Wednesday, 24 September, President Karin Keller-Sutter cited security and freedom as key values in marking the start of another new era 80 years after the founding of the UN. She also reaffirmed Switzerland's support for the UN's reform efforts.
In her speech, President Keller-Sutter emphasised the responsibility of states to create an environment in which their citizens are able to develop freely in safety and security. Security and freedom are the most important prerequisites for economic growth and prosperity: "They require institutions that are legally sound, reliable and capable of taking action. And they require political, social and financial stability. (...) Only states that are strong domestically can show true solidarity and contribute to a successful international community". Switzerland appeals to all states to resolutely renew their commitment to the values proclaimed 80 years ago in the UN Charter, she noted. As a reliable host state and member state, Switzerland will work towards a more efficient UN and sustainable multilateralism.
President Keller-Sutter took part in a summit in New York on Monday to mark the 80th anniversary of the UN. She also took part in an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the World Conference on Women in Beijing. Ms Keller-Sutter explained that recent crises had set back the cause of gender equality: "The progress we have fought for over decades is now at risk in too many countries. But the solutions are already in our hands, set out in multilateral frameworks that have long been in place". What we now need is to build on that foundation and commit to putting it into practice. She also stressed the importance of International Geneva as the UN's operational centre.
Bilateral meetings
On the margins of the UN General Assembly, President Keller-Sutter discussed bilateral issues and global challenges with heads of state and government. Ms Keller-Sutter met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, among others.
Topics of discussion included current conflicts and the search for solutions, International Geneva and Switzerland's good offices. The UN Secretary-General emphasised the continuing importance of International Geneva as a hub for multilateral diplomacy, humanitarian aid and human rights. A meeting with Iranian President Massoud Pezeshkian is also planned.
