Yesterday, 22 September, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna took part in a high-level UN conference in New York focused on finding peaceful solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including the implementation of the two-state solution.

The minister underlined that Estonia's position is clear: the only lasting solution is the creation of two independent states. "The path to lasting peace requires meaningful dialogue, compromise and a change in patterns of behaviour from both sides - Israel as well as Palestine," Tsahkna said. "The role of the international community is to act as mediator, to prevent the deterioration of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and to bring the parties to the negotiating table as quickly as possible. Estonia maintains active contacts with both Israeli and Palestinian representatives and stands ready to support the peace process."

The minister added that the first essential step towards peace is respecting the principles of international law - establishing a ceasefire, ending attacks on civilians, ensuring the opening of humanitarian corridors and securing the release of all hostages.

Yesterday's conference followed up on the two-state solution conference organised in July by France and Saudi Arabia, which Estonia also attended. On 12 September, Estonia joined 142 UN member states, including 25 members of the European Union, in voting for the New York Declaration, which contains concrete proposals for achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

In addition to the conference on Palestine, Minister Tsahkna also attended a meeting of the European Union's foreign ministers, which focused on maintaining pressure on Russia, supporting Ukraine, UN reform, and the situation in the Middle East. The meeting also featured a joint statement by the NB6 countries, including Estonia, addressing the plight of Ukrainian children deported to Russia. The Minister also delivered remarks at a Beijing +30 event on women's and girls' rights, and met with the Maldivian Foreign Minister, Dr Abdulla Khaleel.
