Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said yesterday, 19 September, during a meeting in Stockholm with his Swedish counterpart Maria Malmer Stenergard, that Russia's brazen violation of Estonia's airspace demonstrates how Moscow is increasingly testing boundaries, and it underlines the need to collectively intensify pressure on Russia.
"The history, economy and security of Estonia and Sweden are closely intertwined, and our cooperation forms the foundation for both Estonians' and Swedes' prosperity, as well as for securing the freedom and safety of our countries," Tsahkna said at the meeting with the Swedish foreign minister.
"Today's incursion into Estonian airspace by Russian fighter jets, along with nearly 20 Russian drones entering Polish territory last week, is a disturbing reminder that the threat from Russia extends far beyond Ukraine," Tsahkna said, adding that both political and economic pressure on Russia must be stepped up in response to its actions.
"The European Commission today presented proposals for the 19th sanctions package, and I expect the package to be adopted swiftly. We must also move forward with using Russia's frozen assets for the benefit of Ukraine and decide on the imposition of customs duties," Tsahkna stated.
The meeting also covered continued military, political and economic support for Ukraine, including assistance for Ukraine and Moldova on the path towards EU membership.
The foreign ministers also discussed strengthening economic relations between Estonia and Sweden and cooperation within the Nordic-Baltic Eight (NB8) format.
As part of the visit, Tsahkna also discussed current foreign and security policy issues with Peter Hultqvist, Chairman of the Defence Committee of the Swedish Parliament, and Mattias Karlsson, Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, and laid a wreath at the memorial to the victims of the MS Estonia ferry disaster.
