Stop the atrocities in Darfur: Civilians must be protected, Statement by the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan, Denise Brown
UNOCHA - United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs
(Port Sudan, 19 September 2025) I am gravely alarmed by an attack today that struck a mosque near the Abu Shouk camp in the Daraja Oula neighbourhood in El Fasher, North Darfur State, and claimed the lives of dozens of civilians who were worshipping there.
International humanitarian law demands the protection of mosques and the civilians worshipping in them. It is also a war crime to intentionally direct attacks against buildings dedicated to religion. This attack, reportedly carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), must be investigated and the perpetrators held accountable.
I send condolences to all the affected families and express solidarity with them and all the people affected by the ongoing conflict. Constant care must be taken to spare civilians and civilian objects - homes, hospitals, schools, mosques - throughout military operations.
The ongoing siege of El Fasher has already created a severe humanitarian crisis, cutting off food, medicine and other life-saving supplies. Humanitarian access of personnel and supplies must be facilitated in order to reach all those in need.
The UN Secretary-General has already called for an immediate ceasefire in and around El Fasher.
