Israel's airstrike on Doha, the capital of Qatar on September 9 constituted a blatant violation of Qatar's territorial sovereignty and national security, a flagrant breach of international law and the UN Charter, a deliberate sabotage of efforts to achieve peace, and China firmly opposes and strongly condemns such actions, Fu Cong, China's permanent representative to the United Nations, said at an emergency meeting held by the UN Security Council on Thursday local time, according to China Media Group (CMG).
Fu noted that on September 7, the US had proposed a new ceasefire agreement and claimed that Israel had agreed to it, but just two days later, a Hamas delegation engaged in talks over the ceasefire agreement was attacked by Israel. Such dishonest, irresponsible and deliberate behavior of sabotaging negotiations is extremely egregious, the Chinese envoy said, according to CMG report posted on Sina Weibo.
China is deeply concerned that this incident may further escalate regional tensions, it must be emphasized that the occurrence of this incident is inseparable from the long-standing imbalance in the positions of certain external powers on Middle East issues, said Fu.
China urges certain major powers to prioritize regional peace and stability, adopt a fair and responsible approach, and work with the international community to play a constructive role in promoting a ceasefire and de-escalation, said the Chinese envoy.
The Chinese side reiterated that military means and the abuse of force are not the solution; an immediate ceasefire is the only correct way to save lives and bring hostages home, Fu said, adding that China strongly calls on all parties, particularly Israel, to make greater efforts toward silencing the guns and restarting negotiations — not the opposite.
Israel must immediately halt all military operations in Gaza, fulfill its international humanitarian obligations as an occupying power, fully restore humanitarian access, and support the UN and other humanitarian agencies in carrying out relief efforts, the Chinese envoy said.
