Iran reasserts indisputable sovereignty over three Persian Gulf islands

The Iranian Foreign Ministry has categorically dismissed claims in the final statement of a recent Arab League meeting, underscoring the Islamic Republic's indisputable sovereignty over the three Persian Gulf islands.
"The Foreign Ministry of the Islamic Republic of Iran once again reaffirms Iran's indisputable sovereignty over the islands of Abu Musa, Greater Tunb, and Lesser Tunb as inseparable parts of Iran's territorial domain," the ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"It condemns any territorial claims against Iran and emphasizes that repeating baseless assertions in similar statements will not alter the geographical, historical, or legal realities of these islands. All measures taken on these three Iranian islands are in line with Iran's sovereign rights to safeguard their security and safety and to protect Iran's national interests."
Describing the Islamic Republic as the "most effective" provider of security across the Persian Gulf and West Asia region, the Iranian Foreign Ministry underlined the country's responsibility to ensure freedom of navigation in the strategic area.
"Iran is the most effective provider of maritime security in the Persian Gulf and regional and international waters, and has always guaranteed the safe passage of ships and vessels through the Strait of Hormuz," the statement said.
"Within the framework of protecting its national interests and territorial sovereignty, and through full and responsible oversight of the strategic Hormuz Strait's entry and exit points, the Islamic Republic of Iran will not hesitate to take any action necessary to ensure freedom of navigation in accordance with international law and regulations, while preventing any violation of its national sovereignty."
The Persian Gulf islands of Abu Musa, and the Greater and Lesser Tunbs have historically been part of Iran, proof of which can be found and corroborated by countless historical, legal, and geographical documents in Iran and other parts of the world. However, the United Arab Emirates has repeatedly laid claim to the islands.
The islands fell under British control in 1921, but on November 30, 1971, a day after British forces left the region and just two days before the UAE was to become an official federation, Iran's sovereignty over the islands was restored.
The ministry on Tuesday also called on member states of the Arab League to maintain Islamic-Arab unity in confronting the domination and aggression of the Israeli regime, and to refrain from any actions or rhetoric that would divert regional and global attention from the central issue of the region and the Islamic world, namely the ongoing genocide in the occupied Palestinian territories.
The Foreign Ministry also roundly rejected as unfounded the allegations of sending military shipments to Yemen or interfering in the Arab country's internal affairs.
"While the Zionist regime continues its genocide in occupied Palestine, its aggression and occupation in Syria and Lebanon, and repeated terrorist and aggressive attacks on Yemen with the full support of the United States, raising such fabricated claims, mostly orchestrated by the Zionist regime, does not help the promotion of the interests of the Islamic Ummah," the statement said.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran, reiterating its principled policy of good neighborliness, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries, stresses the importance of strengthening unity and coordination among regional countries and avoiding divisive positions," it added.
Emphasizing the need to establish lasting security and stability in West Asia, the Persian Gulf, and the Sea of Oman through intra-regional mechanisms and the participation of all regional countries, free from destabilizing and destructive interference by external actors, the ministry said, "Iran remains committed to enhancing regional cooperation to achieve this goal."
The Foreign Ministry also welcomed the Arab League's strong condemnation of the Tel Aviv regime's continued genocide in Gaza and the occupying entity's crimes against the oppressed Palestinian people.
The statement stressed the urgent need for effective and immediate measures, including the cessation of all political, diplomatic, and economic relations with the regime, to compel it to stop its atrocities in occupied Palestine.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been committing genocide in the Gaza Strip, resulting in the killing of 64,522 civilians and the injury of 163,096 others, the majority of whom are children and women.
Hundreds of thousands have also been displaced, and famine has claimed the lives of 393 people, including 140 children.
