Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned Europe's double standards on the Gaza war, highlighting its weak response to the genocide compared with the Russia-Ukraine war, and calling it "a failure."
Speaking on Wednesday, Sánchez warned that such inconsistencies threaten Europe's credibility on the world stage.
"It is a failure ... Absolutely," Sanchez said. "Within the European Union, there are countries divided over how to influence Israel. But this is not acceptable. We cannot continue like this if we want to strengthen our credibility on other crises, such as the one in Ukraine."
He described the European and Western reaction to Israel's genocidal war on the Palestinian territory as "one of the darkest episodes of international relations in the 21st century."
He emphasized the inconsistency of Europe's stance, saying, "The roots of these wars are completely different, but the world is watching the EU and Western society and asking: Why are there double standards regarding Ukraine and Gaza?"
Sanchez, the first European leader to denounce Israel's genocidal actions in Gaza, welcomed other European countries following Spain's lead in recognizing a Palestinian state.
"Spain has been very vocal within the EU and the international community. Within the EU, we have advocated suspending the strategic partnership with Israel," Sanchez stated.
His comments come a day after Gaza's health officials reported that 361 Palestinians have died of hunger since October 7, 2023, when Israel launched its genocidal campaign against the Palestinians in the besieged territory.
In May 2025, Spain urged the international community to impose sanctions and embargoes on Israel to stop the war.
In May 2024, Spain, together with Ireland and Norway, formally recognized the State of Palestine. Sanchez described the recognition as both a moral duty and a call for peace, justice, and adherence to international law.
Spain intensified its pressure on the EU by urging a review and potential suspension of the EU-Israel Association Agreement.
Spanish officials argued that Israel's assault on Gaza violated the agreement's human rights clause, warning that maintaining normal relations risked damaging the EU's credibility on human rights issues.
In November 2023, the Spanish government suspended arms export licenses to Israel, citing the risk that such sales could facilitate violations of international humanitarian law in Gaza.
