Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has praised Turkey's decision to close its airspace to Israeli aircraft and restrict trade ties with Tel Aviv, describing the measures as a firm stance against Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza.
"The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) highly appreciates the Turkish positions in support of our Palestinian people amid the ongoing brutal genocide waged by the criminal Zionist enemy," Hamas said in a statement on Friday.
The Gaza-based resistance movement further urged other Arab and Islamic countries to take the same measures against the Israeli regime to end the devastating onslaught against the Gaza Strip, where more than 63,000 Palestinians have been killed so far.
"We urge Türkiye, Arab and Islamic countries, and all free countries worldwide to increase the punitive measures against the criminal Zionist entity, sever all ties with it, and isolate it, in order to compel it to halt the genocide and the destruction of Gaza and all means of life within it, as well as to hold its leaders accountable for their crimes against humanity," read the statement.
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, at an extraordinary session of the Turkish parliament on Gaza on Friday, said his country has completely severed economic and trade ties with Israel and has closed its airspace to its aircraft, in protest over the war in Gaza.
"We have completely cut off our trade with Israel. We do not allow Turkish ships to go to Israeli ports. We do not allow their planes to enter our airspace," Fidan said.
Fidan noted Israel has been "committing genocide in Gaza for the past two years, ignoring basic humanitarian values right before the world's eyes."
Hamas hails Malaysia's call for Israel's expulsion from the UN
In a separate statement on Friday, the resistance group also welcomed Malaysia's call for Israel to be expelled from the United Nations over its genocidal actions in Gaza.
"We in the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) hail Malaysia's call to suspend Israel's membership in the United Nations (UN) and impose sanctions on it," the statement said.
Hamas also called on other countries to take measures to suspend Israel's UN membership and impose sanctions against the Zionist entity to end the Gaza war and the starvation of 2.3 million Palestinians in the besieged territory.
"We call on the Arab, Islamic and free countries worldwide to adopt this call and to take all kinds of action to push for suspending the membership of the criminal Zionist entity and imposing sanctions on it, in order to stop the ongoing crimes of genocide and starvation against our Palestinian people."
Earlier this month, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) confirmed that famine is occurring in the Gaza Governorate as of August 15.
The Israeli-imposed famine is projected to spread to Deir al-Balah and Khan Younis by the end of September.
Currently, over half a million Palestinians face starvation; by next month, the number could exceed 640,000.
At least 132,000 children under five are at risk of acute malnutrition, with than 43,000 of them expected to face life-threatening conditions in the coming months.
Gaza's Health Ministry has recorded five deaths "due to famine and malnutrition" in the past 24 hours, including two children, bringing the total number of hunger-related deaths to 322, including 121 children.
