The meeting focused on Russia's continuing aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, and the coordination of the EU's engagement with third countries ahead of a UN General Assembly session. The meeting took place in Copenhagen on 29-30 August as part of the Danish presidency of the Council of the EU.
During a discussion on Russia's aggression against Ukraine, the foreign ministers covered current developments and prospects for stepping up pressure on Russia. The goal is to persuade Moscow to engage in meaningful negotiations leading to an end of the war in Ukraine. Deputy Prime Minister Radosław Sikorski advocated for continued expansion of restrictions against Russia and strongly supported the current preparations for a new sanctions package. The head of Polish diplomacy considered maintaining Western unity to be a priority. He emphasised that coordinating positions between Europe and the US remains the most important factor in achieving a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in Ukraine. "The EU plays a key role in strengthening Ukraine's defence and deterrence capabilities as well as facilitating the recovery process once peace is achieved," said Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski. The foreign ministers of Iceland, Norway, and the United Kingdom also participated in this part of the meeting. During a separate session, the ministers addressed the issue of using the Russian central bank's immobilised assets.
Also discussed was the situation in the Middle East, including Iran and the current situation in the Gaza Strip.
Part of the meeting was devoted to coordinating the EU's engagement with third countries ahead of the forthcoming UN General Assembly session this September. Deputy Prime Minister Sikorski noted the need for the EU to combat Russian disinformation and propaganda, including through dialogue with third countries.
