On 27 August, Minister for Defence Pål Jonson and Minister for Foreign Affairs Maria Malmer Stenergard received Peru's Minister of Defence Walter Astudillo and Minister of Foreign Affairs Elmer Schialer for meetings and lunch at Karlberg Palace in Stockholm.
The visit from Peru began with a welcoming reception outside Karlberg Palace and a guard of honour.
Thereafter Pål Jonson, Maria Malmer Stenergard, Walter Astudillo and Elmer Schialer held a bilateral meeting inside the Palace where they discussed developing cooperation between Sweden and Peru and the current security situation. They also discussed proceedings going forward if Peru were to choose the Swedish Gripen as its next combat aircraft.
"Sweden has good relations with Peru, and I look forward to further deepening our relations. There are possibilities for broader cooperation within areas such as defence and innovation. We're also pleased that the Gripen is being considered as an alternative ahead of Peru's upcoming combat aircraft procurement," says Mr Jonson.
"The visit from Peru follows my and the Minister for Defence's respective visits to Peru earlier this year. The purpose of this visit is to consolidate and develop the already strong relationship between Sweden and Peru and to further strengthen political and economic relations," says Ms Stenergard.
Before the meetings at the Palace, Mr Astudillo and Mr Schialer visited Gripen aircraft manufacturer Saab in Linköping.
