Tehran, IRNA -- UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has repeated his call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza as the Israeli regime launches a new large-scale offensive to occupy Gaza City and forcibly displace its residents.
"It is vital to reach immediately a ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all [captives], and to avoid the massive death and destruction that a military operation against Gaza would inevitably cause," Guterres wrote in a post on X.
He also demanded that the Israeli plan to expand illegal settlement construction, which would divide the West Bank, be reversed. "All settlement construction is a violation of international law," he added.
Israel has escalated its assaults on Gaza City as part of its plan to capture the area, forcibly displacing nearly one million residents and conducting "systematic demolitions" of Palestinian houses.
Hamas has said that Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu is ignoring international mediation attempts for a ceasefire and pressing ahead with the military takeover of Gaza City.
