The military wing of the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas, the al-Qassam Brigades, has launched attacks on Israeli positions in southern Gaza, killing and wounding several invading soldiers.

In a statement, the al-Qassam Brigades said its fighters struck a newly established Israeli position southeast of Khan Younis on Wednesday morning.

During the operation, they targeted multiple Merkava 4 tanks with explosive devices and al-Yassin 105 shells, and hit several homes used by Israeli forces as bases with six anti-fortification and anti-personnel shells, accompanied by machine-gun fire.

The resistance fighters also engaged Israeli forces at close range inside several homes, using light weapons and hand grenades.

Palestinian snipers also shot and killed a "Merkava 4" tank commander.

According to the statement by Hamas, the fighters also struck the operation zone and its surrounding areas with several mortar shells to cut off military reinforcements to the regime's forces and secure the withdrawal of the al-Qassam fighters.

A Palestinian fighter detonated himself as Israeli reinforcements arrived, leaving multiple soldiers dead and wounded.

The military operation lasted for several hours, and Israeli helicopters were spotted landing in the area to evacuate the wounded soldiers.

The Israeli military confirmed the attack, claiming it caused injuries to the regime's troops.

Israeli media said the resistance fighters who carried out the operation emerged from a nearby tunnel.

The operation was described by Palestinian resources as "one of the most complex and heroic operations since the start of Israel's genocidal war on the strip."

Israel has launched a genocidal war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, after Palestinian resistance fighters carried out the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the Zionist entity in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of death and destruction against Palestinians.

The regime's bloody onslaught on Gaza has so far killed more than 62,122 Palestinians and injured 156,758 others, according to Gaza's health ministry.

The Wednesday operation came as Israel's minister of military affairs, Israel Katz, approved a plan to occupy Gaza City, the largest city in the besieged strip.
