MANILA -- Philippine Army (PA) chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete has ordered troops to quash any threats to the first-ever parliamentary elections in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) scheduled in October.
Nafarrete specifically gave the order to the Maguindanao del Norte-based 6th Infantry Division (ID) during his visit to its headquarters in Datu Odin Sinsuat on Tuesday, the PA said in a statement on Wednesday.
"Our objective is singular: That is to secure the elections, suppress threats, and maintain peace. To all personnel, remember that we remain non-partisan at all times," Nafarrete said.
He urged the troops to ensure that the historic elections on Oct. 13 remain peaceful, fair and fully compliant with existing laws and regulations.
"May this significant event serve as a lasting example for future generations that rivalry can be resolved through democratic means, without harm, without fear, and always in the spirit of peace," the PA chief said.
Aside from the 6th ID, the 1st and 11th Infantry Divisions will also be tapped to help secure the BARMM elections, which will be held in various municipalities of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Tawi-Tawi, and Cotabato City.
The Commission on Elections has declared the election period and gun ban in BARMM from Aug. 14 to Oct. 28. (PNA)
