On August 11-17 the NATO Baltic Air Policing Detachment in the Baltic states was scrambled to intercept aircraft of the Russian Federation approaching through international airspace in violation of the international flight regulations twice.
On August 11 NATO fighter aircraft were alerted to intercept one SU-33 and one SU-24MR flying through international airspace from mainland Russia and back. Their onboard transponders were switched off, the crews had no pre-filed plans and were not maintaining radio communication.
