The Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran "observes with open eyes" the developments in the South Caucasus given the region's political, economic, and geopolitical importance to the Islamic Republic and neighboring countries.

Esmaeil Baghaei made the remarks in a radio interview on Sunday, amid reports indicating that a US private consortium would oversee the Zangezur corridor along Iran's northwestern border under a recently-signed peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

"We observe developments with open eyes, and we neither oversimplify nor downplay any issue," he said.

"The South Caucasus region holds political, economic, and geopolitical importance for us and the regional countries, especially Russia."

Baghaei also underlined the need to avoid misinterpretations and misinformation that may be aimed at disrupting Iran's relations with the South Caucasus states.

He further reiterated Iran's red line which is foreign interference in the region's affairs.

"We do not consider foreign intervention and the presence of extra-regional forces to be beneficial under any circumstances, and we believe that such involvement leads to geopolitical complications," he said.

Baghaei said Yerevan has assured Tehran that no foreign forces will be stationed along the joint border and that the Zangezur route will be reconstructed by Armenian companies and an American firm registered under Armenian law.

Under Article 12 of Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement, no foreign military forces will be deployed along the borders of Armenia and Azerbaijan, he added.

Baghaei also said Iran has good relations with countries in the South Caucasus and attaches importance to regional stability and security.

"The Islamic Republic stands ready to take steps toward strengthening bilateral relations and cooperation with regional countries, and supports any initiative that contributes to enhancing stability and security in the region."
