Tehran, IRNA -- Palestinian media outlets have reported that Israeli fighter jets carried out an airstrike targeting a journalist's tent outside the main entrance of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. The attack, which took place on Sunday night, killed five media professionals, including two reporters from Qatar's Al Jazeera TV network.
The victims of the airstrike were Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qreiqeh, both journalists with Al Jazeera, as well as camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal, and Moamen Aliwa.
Since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict on October 7, 2023, media professionals have been consistently targeted by Israeli forces. According to Gaza's government information office, the recent deaths bring the total number of journalists killed during the conflict to 237.
The Palestinian Information Center in Gaza condemned the attack as a brutal, horrific, and monstrous crime committed by the Israeli military. It emphasized that the airstrike was a premeditated and deliberate assault on journalists near the Al-Shifa Hospital, also injuring several other reporters.
The center underscored that the targeting of journalists and media institutions by Israeli warplanes constitutes a blatant war crime intended to silence the truth and eliminate evidence of genocidal acts.
It also called on the International Federation of Journalists, the Federation of Arab Journalists, and all international journalism and human rights organizations around the world to condemn these crimes and take immediate action to ensure the full protection of journalists and media institutions in Gaza.
The center also demanded accountability for the Israeli officials for their crimes against press freedom and the right to access information.
In a statement, Spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations Stephane Dujarric expressed condolences to the families of the deceased. He noted that the UN is currently reviewing the events in Gaza and emphasized that all killings of journalists must be condemned. Dujarric asserted that journalists should be able to work freely in Gaza and elsewhere without harassment, intimidation, or fear of being targeted.
