Statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - France (02) 07.08.2025

Algeria Ministry of Foreign Affairs

The Chargé d'Affaires at the embassy of the French Republic in Algeria was summoned to the ministry of Foreign Affairs by the Director of Immunities and Privileges, the ministry said in a statement.

In this respect, two notes verbales were handed to the French diplomat.

The first note verbale formally notified the denunciation by Algeria of the 2013 Algerian-French Agreement on reciprocal visa exemptions for holders of diplomatic and service passports. The denunciation goes further than the simple suspension notified by the French party and definitively puts an end to the very existence of this agreement.

Consequently, and without prejudice to the deadlines set out in the agreement, the Algerian Government has decided to subject holders of French diplomatic and service passports to visa requirements with immediate effect. It also reserves the right to make the granting of these visas subject to the same conditions as those that the French Government will impose on Algerian nationals. This is a strict application of the principle of reciprocity, which expresses, above all, Algeria's rejection of France's attempts at provocation, intimidation and bargaining.

The second note verbale aims to inform the French side of the Algerian authorities' decision to end the provision, free of charge, of real estate belonging to the Algerian State to the French Embassy in Algeria. This note also announces the review of the highly advantageous leases contracted by the embassy with the OPGI of Algeria and invites the French side to send a delegation to Algiers to begin discussions on this matter.

It should be noted that the Algerian diplomatic representation in France does not enjoy any advantages of this nature. Consequently, the Algerian action thus decided also aims to bring balance and reciprocity into the overall Algerian-French relationship.
