Press release on the protest lodged with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Russia

On August 4, a firm protest was lodged with the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Moscow in response to the unacceptable remarks made on July 25 by Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany to Japan Petra Sigmund, which cast doubt on Russia's sovereignty and jurisdiction over the Southern Kuril Islands. Such statements constitute a blatant violation of the territorial integrity of the Russian Federation.

The Russian side emphasised that the Southern Kuril Islands were lawfully transferred to our country following World War II, as enshrined in post-war agreements among the Allied powers and the United Nations Charter. Russia's sovereignty over these territories is indisputable.

The German side was reminded that aligning itself with the legally void territorial claims of official Tokyo - those rooted in a revanchist interpretation of the outcomes of World War II - is particularly sacrilegious in a year when progressive humanity marks the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War over Nazi Germany and its satellites, the defeat of militarist Japan, and the conclusion of World War II.
