Seven more Palestinians, including a local sports champion, have died from forced starvation and malnutrition in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Gaza's Health Ministry reported on Sunday that seven Palestinians have died in the past 24 hours due to these causes, bringing the total number of deaths from starvation and malnutrition in Gaza to 176, including 93 children.

The Israeli regime blocked food aid from entering Gaza in March. Although the blockade was eased in late May, food distribution was subsequently taken over by the controversial Israel- and United States-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.

Since then, famine has been spreading throughout the Palestinian territories, resulting in increasing deaths due to starvation and malnutrition.

On Saturday, a source at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City announced the death of a local sports champion due to starvation. Seventeen-year-old Atef Abu Khater succumbed to malnutrition, his family shared.

He arrived at the hospital in critical condition, suffering severe complications from a lack of food and medical care. His weight had fallen dramatically from a normal 70 kg to just 25 kg before he passed away.

The Palestinian people in Gaza are in dire need of food as the Israeli blockade on aid continues. Officials from the UN and humanitarian agencies report that this blockade and the associated restrictions on humanitarian aid deliveries have led to widespread starvation among Palestinians.

In a video, Israeli captive Evyatar David, held in Gaza by the Hamas movement, pleaded with Israeli officials to allow food to be delivered to Gaza. David, 24, who has been held since October 2023, said food shortages were impacting them as well. "I haven't eaten for days... I barely got drinking water."

David's family urged the Israeli regime to ensure food delivery to Gaza and called on the international community to apply pressure on Israeli officials to "do everything possible to save Evyatar."

According to Gaza health authorities, the ongoing genocidal war has killed at least 60,839 people and wounded 149,588.
