The Government of the Republic of Cyprus strongly condemns the ongoing unlawful, provocative, and inhumane treatment of five Greek Cypriots, citizens of the Republic of Cyprus, by the Turkish military occupying regime. Yesterday, once again, the fundamental human rights and basic freedoms of the individuals concerned were violated through procedures that are offensive to the very notion of justice.
The decision issued yesterday by the so-called military court of the occupying regime, which is subordinate to Türkiye, and the continuation of the unlawful detention following the abduction of Greek Cypriots who were either visiting their properties in the occupied areas or had simply entered the area, clearly demonstrates the disregard shown by Türkiye and its subordinate regime for international law.
It is now evident that this action, premeditated by Türkiye and publicly indicated in advance by the Turkish Cypriot leader, aims to intimidate Greek Cypriots who visit the occupied areas or who submit applications to the so-called Immovable Property Commission.
Abduction, hostage-taking, and a process devoid of due legal standards; these are the actions of the unlawful regime, acting under Türkiye's direction. Türkiye bears full responsibility and must be held accountable.
The Government has submitted relevant reports and representations to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, the President of the European Council, the President of the European Parliament, the President of the European Commission, the European Union (EU) High Representative, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, and Foreign Ministers and Deputy Foreign Ministers from EU member states, among others.
The Government continues and is intensifying all appropriate diplomatic démarches and representations, with the aim of ensuring the immediate termination of the unlawful detention of the Greek Cypriots.
