Iran has expressed deep concern over the escalating crisis in Sudan, warning that the establishment of a rival government by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) endangers the North African nation's security and territorial integrity.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei described the RSF's announcement of a parallel government as a violation of Sudan's sovereignty and a move with potentially "destructive" consequences for the country's stability.

The spokesman also decried foreign interference in the internal affairs of Sudan as "very harmful", calling for intra-Sudan dialogue to solve the crisis in the country.

"The solution to the crisis in Sudan is to halt clashes and initiate Sudanese-Sudanese dialogue without foreign interference," Baghaei said.

Last week, the coalition led by the RSF announced the members of the rival government, with political analysts warning that it could push Sudan further towards de facto division.

In April 2023, war broke out between the RSF, backed by the United Arab Emirates, and the army, led by Gen. Abdel Fattah Burhan, after they were once allies. The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced millions of others.

In March, after nearly two years of fighting, the Sudanese army regained its central states and Khartoum.

But the RSF quickly seized most of Darfur with the exception of al-Fashir—the military's last foothold in the western Darfur region, and an RSF stronghold—where fighting continues.

Nyala in southern Darfur is the seat of the RSF's rival government, which is condemned by the UN and African Union.
