MANILA -- President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday called on newly installed Philippine Army (PA) chief Lt. Gen. Antonio Nafarrete to demonstrate firm leadership and unwavering vigilance as he takes command of the service, amid heightened global uncertainty and security challenges.
Speaking at the 67th Philippine Army Change of Command and Retirement Ceremony in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig City, Marcos underscored the critical role of the Army in safeguarding national sovereignty and advancing peace and stability.
"You will be assuming your role at a time when geopolitical tensions and global uncertainty are high," Marcos told Nafarrete.
"This will demand your vigilance and leadership to deliver clear direction and to show a firm commitment."
Nafarrete, the former commander of the AFP Western Mindanao Command, replaces Lt. Gen. Roy Galido, who officially retired after two years as PA Commanding General.
Both generals are members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) "Bigkis-Lahi" Class of 1990.
Marcos assured Nafarrete of the government's full backing as he leads the Army through a more complex and evolving security environment.
"I have full confidence that under your command, the Philippine Army will remain steadfast—a pillar of strength, integrity, and professionalism," Marcos said.
"Bilang inyong Commander-in-Chief, ipinapangako ko na ipagpapatuloy natin at patitibayin pa natin ang ating Sandatahang Lakas (As your Commander-in-Chief, I promise that we will continue to strengthen our Armed Forces)," he added.
The President urged the new Army leadership to stay true to its mission and values and to continue serving the nation with courage, discipline, and loyalty.
"Nawa'y magsilbi itong inspirasyon upang mas magampanan ng Philippine Army ang kanyang tungkulin—ang magsilbi sa bayan ng may tibay ng loob, may paninindigan, at katapatan (May this serve as inspiration for the Army to fulfill its duty with courage, conviction, and integrity)," he said.
Earlier in the ceremony, Marcos conferred the Presidential Legion of Honor Award on Galido for his "exceptional service and dedication," citing his leadership in modernizing Army capabilities, expanding civil-military cooperation, and strengthening regional defense partnerships.
"The Army has been enriched by your service and will grow stronger under the leadership of its next Commanding General," Marcos said. (PNA)
