On 28-30 July in New York, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Julius Pranevičius is participating at the UN high-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution, which is being chaired by France and Saudi Arabia.
"We support the political process for the implementation of the two-state solution, so that the State of Israel and an independent, democratic, continuous, sovereign and viable State of Palestine could co-exist side by side in peace and security," Pranevičius said.
The conference discusses how the international community is contributing to progress towards a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in the Middle East, ensuring security for all countries in the region, also in light of developments since the terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas on 7 October 2023.
The Vice-Minister confirmed Lithuania's support for international efforts to achieve peace and security in the Middle East and noted Lithuania's support for the Palestinian Authority through bilateral cooperation and European Union projects. The Lithuanian representative called for ensuring the security interests of Israel in response to the threat posed by Hamas to Israel, as well as for an unconditional release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas. He expressed concerns about the humanitarian and human rights situation in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank and called on all sides to respect international humanitarian law. There is a need to push for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to urgently scale up humanitarian assistance to the starving people in Gaza. Lithuania also supported the efforts of the U.S., Qatar, and Egypt for mediation between Israel and Hamas, and the Arab-backed plan for Gaza's future.
Since 2009, 21 bilateral development cooperation projects in Palestine have been implemented with Lithuanian funds (one project is still ongoing), for which more than 330 thousand euros have been allocated. Support has been provided to strengthen democratic and civil society, digitalisation, non-formal education, and empower women's entrepreneurship, etc. In addition, Lithuania participated in 3 Twinning projects in the areas of environment and good governance between 2019 and 2025, and joined the Sustainable Growth, Jobs and Resilience initiative to support Palestine in digitalisation in 2023.
Since 2012, Lithuania has allocated more than 674,000 euros to help Palestinians through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).
