Minna-Liina Lind, Undersecretary for Global Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is attending the United Nations International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution from 28 to 30 July.

In her speech, Undersecretary Lind stressed that the only sustainable solution to the conflict is the creation of two states - a safe and internationally recognised Israel and an independent and viable Palestine. "The path to lasting peace requires meaningful dialogue, courage and leadership from both Israel and Palestine," she said. "The international community must play a mediating role by leading the negotiations and supporting parties committed to peace. Estonia is ready to fully contribute to the implementation of the two-state solution."

Undersecretary Lind also stressed the importance of the protection of civilians, access to humanitarian aid, the release of hostages and compliance with international law. "Ending the destruction of Gaza is not only a political imperative, but also a moral obligation," the undersecretary stressed. "The road to peace will not be easy, but violence and aggression must stop immediately."

Estonia has provided humanitarian aid to alleviate the Gaza crisis through various international humanitarian organisations and will continue to support the institutions of the Palestinian Authority, including in implementing reforms. Estonia also supports Palestine refugees in the Middle East through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA).

During the visit, Undersecretary Lind will also meet with the Palestinian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Varsen Ohannes Vartan Aghabekian.

Meetings also took place with the Armenian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Vahan Kostanyan, with high-ranking UN officials - Under-Secretary-General for Policy Guy Ryder and UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights Ilze Brands Kehris - and with the South African Ambassador to the UN Mathu Joyini.
