RAMSTEIN, Germany -- The German Air Force will deploy to Mihail Kogălniceanu Air Base, Romania, as part of NATO's enhanced Air Policing (eAP) mission in south-eastern Europe.
Deploying with five Eurofighter Typhoon aircraft, the German detachment will take over the enhanced Air Policing baton from the Italian Air Force, for the next eight months. The detachment will be supported with around 170 personnel.
"As an Alliance we stand together in our collective readiness to reinforce the eastern flank and ensure the security of NATO airspace" Lieutenant General Holger "Hawk" Neumann, German Air Chief said.
Germany's deployment relieves the Italian Eurofighter detachment, which has maintained continuous air policing presence since April 2025. Italy's Task Force Air concluded its mission and Italy will take on the Baltic Air Policing mission from Amari, Estonia.
During their fourth deployment to Romania, German Eurofighter crews and staff will work closely with their counterparts, additionally conduct live flying exercises with Romanian F-16s and engage in joint training events alongside other NATO air and ground assets. These activities further enhance interoperability and tactical capacity
Since the implementation of NATO's enhanced Air Policing mission in 2014, rotational fighter deployments have provided continuous airspace protection over Romania and reinforced deterrence along NATO's south-eastern border.
