On 28-29 July in Vilnius, Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Sigitas Mitkus received Inês Domingos, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs of Portugal, and discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations, the European Union's shared priorities, and further support for Ukraine.
The Vice-Minister thanked Portugal for its contribution to the security of the Baltic region and stressed the importance of cooperation in the fields of defence, economy, innovation, education, and Europe's historical memory.
"We value Portugal's support for the security of the Baltic states. We strive for a stronger and united Europe ready to respond effectively to geopolitical challenges," Mitkus said.
The meeting also discussed Lithuania's priorities during its EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2027, focused on strengthening European security and defence, EU enlargement and support to Ukraine, fostering competitiveness, and social issues.
"Lithuania strongly supports Ukraine's and Moldova's EU membership by 2030 and calls for accelerating the EU accession talks with these countries by immediately opening negotiating clusters," said the Vice-Minister.
Mitkus emphasized that one of the main priorities of Lithuania's Presidency would be to conclude the negotiations on the EU's next Multiannual Financial Framework for 2028-2034.
"It is crucial for the European Union to have a budget that allows it to adequately address geopolitical challenges, finance the Common Agricultural Policy and Cohesion Policy, fulfill its obligations towards member states, and be competitive in the world," said the Vice-Minister.
The Vice-Minister also invited Portugal to implement Ukraine's reconstruction projects together with Lithuania.
