Minister of National Defence Dovilė Šakalienė with Latvian and Estonian colleagues had a meeting with Secretary of Defense of the United States Pete Hegseth in Washington. They addressed the shared security priorities of significance to the Baltic states and the U.S. alike. U.S. Secretary of Defence thanked the Baltics for the friendship, support and respect to the U.S. troops, as well as their leadership which stands as a role model for the whole Europe.

"The U.S. remains the axis of the transatlantic security while, however, highlighting that Alliance-wide burden-sharing is required in support of this goal. U.S. Secretary of Defence appreciates Lithuania's effort and contribution to their own security and call them exemplary Allies. We particularly appreciate the assurance there would be no headlong decisions concerning the U.S. force presence in our region. Our arguments in favor of importance of the U.S. troop presence in the region are heard," said Minister Dovilė Šakalienė.

According to Minister of National Defence, the importance of deterrence against the russian aggression was highlighted at the meeting. The U.S. side underscored accelerated provision of arms to the Allies as one of the main priorities. Also, defence spending, training and exercises, arms acquisitions, defence industry development and joint production priorities were also emphasized.

U.S. Secretary of Defense noted that the relations between Lithuania and the United States have never been stronger. Lithuania's efforts to modernize and invest in new military capabilities were recognized as vital in ensuring deterrence against potential threats.

"We can see the importance the U.S. attaches to having not just territories for conducting training but also the possibility to conduct specific types of training, including land, air forces, UAVs and electronic warfare maneuvers. This one again highlights the importance of having one more training area in Lithuania and the critical factor it will become," D. Šakalienė underscored.

Lithuania has invested over USD 2 billion in U.S-manufactured weaponry so far. U.S. products currently comprise over 20% of the total of Lithuania's defence acquisitions. Strengthening of the defence industry is a vision shared by Lithuania and the United Stated. Lithuania invites U.S. companies to invest in Lithuania and offers co-production opportunities, "green corridors" and tax exemptions.

Lithuania has been the host of a U.S. battalion and an artillery unit stationed on a persistent basis since 2019. Lithuania plans inaugurating new infrastructure and training basis for U.S. troops as soon as this fall. Lithuania has invested over USD 200 million to that end.

Minister also endorsed the decision of President Donald J. Trump to supply Ukraine with U.S.-made weaponry paid for by NATO Allies. Lithuania proposes to contribute to provision of the Patriot system to Ukraine with up to EUR 30 million.

The U.S. side expressed appreciation for organizing the rescue operation in Pabradė and the exceptional support of the public. It was said to had deeply impressed the Americans at home.
