More than 10,000 Israeli soldiers have been experiencing psychological reactions and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) since the outbreak of the genocidal war on Gaza in October 2023, says a report.

The report, run by the Hebrew newspaper Yedioth Ahronoth, revealed that the Israeli ministry of military affairs is providing treatment for the soldiers affected mentally by the Gaza war.

Of these, the report said, at least 3,769 have been officially recognized as suffering from PTSD.

Moreover, 18,500 new wounded personnel from the army and security forces have joined the rehabilitation department, in addition to tens of thousands who were already undergoing treatment, it added.

The report, citing data released by the ministry of military affairs, estimated that within two and a half years, there will be around 100,000 wounded and disabled soldiers in Israel, with at least half suffering from psychological disorders.

"More than 12,000 soldiers in active duty and reserve have left service due to the psychological impact of the ongoing war, and they have also stopped working in their private lives," it quoted a source with the ministry.

Estimates indicate that the year 2025 will witness an even greater increase in the number of psychologically affected soldiers, and that the number of those needing treatment will rise even further after the war ends or a ceasefire is reached, it warned.

According to experts, during combat, soldiers enjoy a relative form of "psychological immunity," but after returning to normal life, the memories begin to surface, triggering delayed psychological crises, it highlighted.

Three Israeli soldiers committed suicide within 10 days, the Israeli military confirmed in a July 14 statement.

The most recent case involved a soldier serving in the Nahal Brigade, according to Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

On July 10, a soldier from the Golani Brigade took his own life at the Sde Teiman base after returning from Gaza, Israeli daily Haaretz reported.

Israeli media reports a significant surge in suicides among military personnel since the war on Gaza began. Israel Hayom reports 21 soldier suicides in 2024.

Haaretz reported in May that 42 soldiers had ended their lives since the start of the Gaza genocide.
