MANILA -- The Philippine government urged for de-escalation following a violent military border clash between Thailand and Cambodia that reportedly killed at least 12 people on Thursday.

In a statement, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said the Philippines does not take sides in the dispute but stressed "the importance of maintaining open lines of communication and ensuring the de-escalation of the situation."

"We are hopeful our two fellow ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) member states will resolve this issue in accordance with international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes," it said.

"We urge both parties to extend due consideration and care to innocent civilians who may be affected by the ongoing conflict."

The fighting broke out early Thursday near the disputed Ta Moan Thom Temple and eventually spread to at least six areas along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Local Thai reports quoted Thai Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin as saying that 11 Thai civilians and a soldier were killed in the deadly clash.

So far, no Filipino has been reported affected.

The DFA said it is closely monitoring developments and is ready to assist Filipino nationals living in the two states, if needed.

In a separate advisory, the Philippine Embassy in Phnom Penh advised Filipinos residing near the Cambodia-Thailand border areas, specifically in Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear, to monitor the news and report their situation to the embassy. (PNA)
