Tehran, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei says the United States is trying to silence critics of Israel's genocide in Gaza by resorting to sanctions.
Baqaei made the remarks in response to a statement posted Wednesday by Josep Borrell, former European Union foreign policy chief, on his X account.
"And this is just in line with the U.S. sanctioning of Palestine Special Rapporteur, Francesca Albanese, to silence any critics of Israel's continuing genocide and atrocity crimes in Gaza and the West Bank," he said.
Earlier in the day, Borrell called on the E.U. to back Albanese after the U.S. unlawfully targeted the U.N. official with sanctions. Borrell said Washington's unprecedented move against Albanese is a flagrant violation of the U.N. Charter. He added that the E.U. is bound by its treaties to uphold international law and protect all U.N. mandate holders.
Albanese has been a vocal critic of Israel's atrocities in Gaza, where more than 58,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in Israeli attacks since October 7, 2023.
In November, the International Criminal Court (I.C.C.) issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former minister in charge of military affairs, Yoav Gallant, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over the war in Gaza.
