Municipal authorities in the Gaza Strip have announced the suspension of essential services due to a severe fuel shortage resulting from a complete blockade of the already besieged Palestinian region.
In a joint statement released on Sunday, municipalities in central and southern Gaza declared the cessation of all essential services due to the total interruption of fuel necessary for operating equipment.
The suspended services included water well operations, sanitation, waste collection, rubble removal, and road clearing with heavy machinery.
"The (Israeli) occupation's refusal to allow fuel into Gaza, despite numerous appeals, has completely paralyzed municipal facilities, thwarting local efforts to provide even a minimal level of services under these exceptional circumstances," the statement read.
Since March 2, Israel has kept Gaza crossings closed to food, medical supplies, and humanitarian aid, exacerbating an already critical humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian region.
The statement also noted an escalating water crisis in Gaza, heightening health and environmental risks amidst increased demand for water during the summer months.
The municipalities called on the UN and international organizations to take immediate action to supply the fuel necessary to operate vital facilities throughout Gaza.
The United Nations has previously warned that fuel shortages in the Gaza Strip have reached critical levels, pushing the besieged population closer to total collapse.
In a joint statement on Saturday, seven UN agencies stated that fuel is the "backbone of survival in Gaza," crucial for keeping hospitals, water and sanitation systems, ambulances, and humanitarian aid efforts functioning.
According to aid agencies, the ongoing blockade and continuous bombardment have made it nearly impossible to deliver life-saving supplies, including fuel.
The blockade has pushed the Palestinian region into conditions resembling famine, with numerous reports of deaths resulting from hunger.
Israel's military campaign has severely damaged the infrastructure of the Gaza Strip, displaced a significant portion of its population, and brought essential services to the brink of collapse.
Since October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has conducted a brutal military campaign across Gaza, resulting in the deaths of over 58,000 Palestinians, the majority of whom are women and children.
The relentless bombardment has devastated the region, causing food shortages and the spread of disease.
Last November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former war minister Yoav Gallant, for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
