The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas says the latest remarks made by Israel's prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, confirm his "malicious" intentions to obstruct reaching a permanent end to the regime's genocidal war in Gaza and secure the release of all captives held in Gaza.
Netanyahu earlier this week told the captives' families on the sidelines of his visit to the US that a "comprehensive" agreement to release all captives was not achievable," as he tried to persuade them to support a temporary, partial deal, which is currently being indirectly negotiated in Qatar.
Netanyahu said that negotiations on the terms for a permanent ceasefire will begin immediately once the 60-day truce comes into effect, something he refused to do during the previous ceasefire deal, which led to its collapse in March. He also claimed that Hamas determines which captives will be released during the temporary ceasefire.
In a statement on Thursday night, Hamas said it had previously proposed a comprehensive prisoner swap deal that would see all captives held in Gaza be released at once, in exchange for an agreement that would permanently end the Israeli aggression against Gaza, ensure a complete withdrawal of Israeli troops from the strip and allow the unrestricted flow of aid to the besieged territory.
However, Netanyahu "rejected" the proposal and continues to impose more obstacles, the statement said.
The movement stressed that it continues to engage "positively" and "responsibly" in the current negotiations aimed at reaching a ceasefire in Gaza so "our people will be able to reconstruct [the strip] and live with dignity", in exchange for a prisoner swap.
Of the 50 Israeli captives remaining in Gaza, including 20 believed to be alive, the proposal currently being negotiated calls for the release of 10 living captives and 18 deceased during the temporary ceasefire.
Israel has launched a genocidal war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, after Palestinian resistance fighters waged the surprise Operation Al-Aqsa Storm against the Zionist entity in response to the regime's decades-long campaign of bloodletting and devastation against Palestinians.
The regime's bloody onslaught on Gaza has so far killed 57,762 Palestinians and injured 137,656 others, according to the health ministry.
