US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday local time that the US would impose a 35 percent tariff on imports from Canada next month and planned to impose blanket tariffs of 15 percent or 20 percent on most other trade partners, Reuters reported on Friday.

According to Reuters, Trump told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney the new rate would go into effect on August 1 and would go up if Canada retaliated.

Before he announced the 35 percent tariff to Canadian imports, Trump said he plans to impose blanket tariffs of 15 percent or 20 percent on most trade partners, dismissing concerns that further tariffs could negatively affect the stock market or drive inflation, NBC News reported.

"We're just going to say all of the remaining countries are going to pay, whether it's 20 percent or 15 percent. We'll work that out now," Trump was quoted as saying by the network.

"Not everybody has to get a letter. You know that. We're just setting our tariffs," Trump told NBC News on Thursday. But he added that the members of the European Union and Canada would get letters notifying them of new tariff rates "today or tomorrow," per NBC News.

On Wednesday, the Trump administration released a second wave of letters to US trading partners in Asia, Africa and Europe, including the Philippines and Sri Lanka. Moreover, the US will also impose a 50 percent tariff on Brazilian goods starting August 1, according to media reports.

Reuters reported on Thursday that Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said he wanted to find a diplomatic solution to US' threat of 50 percent tariffs on Brazilian exports, but vowed to reciprocate like-for-like if they take effect on August 1.

"We'll first try to negotiate, but if there's no negotiation, the law of reciprocity will be put into practice," Lula said in an interview with Record TV, citing a law Congress recently passed giving the president powers to retaliate against trade barriers. "If they're going to charge us 50, we'll charge them 50," per Reuters.
