The United Nations says it is opposed to any forced displacement of Palestinians in the Gaza Strip, while raising the alarm about the deteriorating health crisis in the territory.
"We firmly stand against any forced displacement of [Palestinian] people," UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said during a news briefing on Wednesday when asked about an Israeli proposal to concentrate the 2.3 million Gaza population in a so-called "humanitarian city" on the outskirts of Gaza City.
"It's not the first time we've heard of such projects. We firmly stand against any forced displacement of people that would only increase risks to themselves," Dujarric said.
The Israeli minister in charge of military affairs said he had instructed the regime forces to prepare a plan to relocate all Palestinians to the "humanitarian city."
Israel Katz said in a closed meeting with Israeli media on Monday that the Gaza population would be gathered in the new zone and from there would be allowed to relocate to other countries.
Katz added that the move would initially affect hundreds of thousands of Gaza residents but would eventually affect the territory's entire population.
According to reports by Israeli media, Katz said Israel aims to implement an "emigration plan, which will happen."
Humanitarian organizations say Israel is planning to transfer Palestinians in Gaza to "concentration camps" inside and outside the territory before they are relocated elsewhere.
In his remarks, Dujarric also cited the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) as saying that the Israeli forces had conducted attacks on tents and residential buildings in Gaza City and Deir al-Balah, with scores of people killed, including medical staff and their families.
"Since October 2023, more than 1,500 medical staff have reportedly been killed. That's what the local Ministry of Health is telling us," he said.
Gaza's health system is collapsing due to continued mass casualty incidents and severe shortages of fuel, medicine, blood, and medical supplies, he said.
"The lack of supplies is putting more pressure on hospitals already operating under severe strain and facing critical shortages of fuel, medicine and medical supplies, as well as blood and blood products," he added.
Dujarric said that humanitarian organizations working with the UN in Gaza had reported an increase in disease among the Palestinian children in the besieged territory, blocked by Israeli forces.
"Our partners on the ground have expressed concern over an increase in suspected cases of meningitis among children under 5," Dujarric said. He also reported cases of bloody diarrhea and acute jaundice.
"Yesterday, out of 10 attempts to coordinate movements with the Israeli authorities, only three were fully facilitated for the collection of medical supplies and the removal of debris. Another three attempts were denied outright, including one to collect the supplies from the Karem Shalom crossing. The remaining four had to be canceled by the organizers," Dujarric added.
Responding to a question on the UN's evaluation of the deadly conduct of the US/Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), responsible for food aid in Gaza, Dujarric said, "They seem to be running a food distribution system, while some people are getting food, people are also getting killed trying to get that food. That's not a way we would run a humanitarian operation."
"A food distribution system where people routinely, routinely get killed while trying to get the food is not humanitarian."
Gaza's health ministry says the Israeli blockade of food, water, fuel and medical supplies to the Palestinian territory, alongside continued attacks by the zionist forces since October 2023, has left more than 57,000 Palestinians dead.
Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former minister of military affairs, Yoav Gallant, are wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for ordering genocide in Gaza and war crimes against Palestinians.
