MANILA -- Philippine Army (PA) commander Lt. Gen. Roy Galido has ordered the 4th Infantry Division (4ID) to sustain their gains against New People's Army (NPA) rebels in the Caraga and Northern Mindanao regions.
In a statement on Thursday, the PA said Galido gave the order during his visit to the 4ID headquarters at Camp Evangelista in Barangay Patag, Cagayan de Oro City on Wednesday.
According to the PA, Galido first met with 4ID's brigade and battalion commanders "to discuss key accomplishments in internal security operations in their respective areas of responsibility."
"The discussion covered sustaining operational readiness and sound administrative management in line with the PA's broader thrust to develop a well-prepared, agile and effective force capable of responding to both internal and external security challenges," it said.
After the meeting with the commanders, Galido held a "Talk to Troops" where he directed the 4ID "to not rest on their laurels and to stay vigilant and proactive to sustain the gains," the PA said.
"Lt. Gen. Galido stressed that while the Division's accomplishments are commendable, new and evolving challenges continue to emerge, requiring constant preparedness and adaptation," it added.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) earlier said it had neutralized a total of 942 NPA rebels and supporters from Jan. 1 to July 3 this year.
Of this, 809 surrendered to government forces, with 71 arrested and 62 killed in various military operations.
Also, a total of 486 firearms and 278 anti-personnel mines were seized and surrendered in the same period. Ninety-two NPA encampments were also captured.
Meanwhile, after his visit to the 4ID headquarters, Galido proceeded to the Camp Evangelista Station Hospital to confer the "Wounded Personnel Medal" on a recovering soldier in recognition of his bravery and sacrifice during the armed encounter against NPA rebels.
In a separate awarding ceremony, 10 soldiers received awards while five battalions gained the CGPA Streamer Awards for their gallantry and outstanding performance in advancing their unit's mission accomplishments. (PNA)
