MANILA -- Forty-nine Chinese warships and coast guard vessels were spotted in three West Philippine Sea (WPS) features in June, a ranking Philippine Navy (PN) official said Tuesday.
In a media briefing in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City, PN spokesperson for the WPS Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said the Navy and the Philippine Coast Guard spotted the Chinese vessels at the following features from June 1 to 30:
- Bajo de Masinloc: nine China Coast Guard vessels (CCGV) and 14 People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) warships;
- Ayungin Shoal: 12 CCGVs and two PLAN ships;
- Pag-asa Island: Nine CCGV and 19 PLAN.
Trinidad said these Chinese vessels "were in and out of the different [WPS] features."
In a separate statement, the PN official said an average of 29 CCGV and PLAN vessels were observed monthly in WPS, making 49 the highest number monitored so far this year.
"Regardless of these numbers, the PN remains fully on top of the situation, demonstrating continued heightened vigilance and sustained presence in our maritime domain," Trinidad said.
He also said vessel monitoring operations recorded consistent maritime activity across the country's exclusive economic zone during the first half of the year.
"An average of over 15,000 domestic and foreign vessels were tracked and monitored each month, highlighting the strategic and economic importance of these waters," Trinidad said.
He, meanwhile, assured the public that the PN remains steadfast and proactive in safeguarding the country's national interests and continues to ensure the security of its waters. (PNA)
