Iran views referendum as fair solution for Palestinian issue: Foreign Minister Araqchi

The Islamic Republic of Iran maintains that a fair solution to resolve the Palestinian issue is through holding a referendum with the participation of all main residents of Palestine, including Jews, Christians, and Muslims. That's according to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi speaking at a luncheon of the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Araqchi said on Sunday that a two-state solution, which has been pushed over the past years, has not yielded any result, because the Israeli regime is the biggest hurdle in the way of implementing it, according to a news release by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

But, he added, the more important issue is that in accordance with that solution, a Palestinian government would be nothing more than a municipality without border, respect, authority and sovereignty.

"We all know that as long as the Palestinian issue is not resolved in a just manner, the Palestinian people's right to self-determination is not secured, and the Zionist regime's atrocities against them are not stopped, insecurity and tension in our [the West Asia] region will not come to an end, and peace and stability will not be established," the top diplomat said.

"Iran considers holding a referendum participated by all main residents of Palestine, including Jews, Christians, and Muslims, a fair solution for the Palestinian issue. This is not an unreal or inaccessible solution, as South Africa's apartheid regime achieved stability through referendum and democracy, not the division of the country into black and white groups," added Araqchi.

He also said that Iran has been rejecting a two-state solution for eight decades now, as its representative in 1948 said during a U.N. session to adopt the partition resolution for Palestine that the solution was merely hiding the fire beneath the ashes.

All main residents of Palestine, including Jews, Muslims, and Christians should live in peace, the top diplomat emphasized, saying, "this is a method through which justice is upheld. Without justice, the Palestinian problem will not be resolved, and without the resolution of the Palestinian problem, other problems of the region would not be resolved either."

That is why Iran expresses its reservation regarding the proposal of the two-state solution mentioned in the BRICS summit's final statement, Araqchi said, adding that Iran will officially register its reservation by submitting a note.
