The Israeli army gave thousands of displaced residents in two refugee camps in the West Bank city of Tulkarem a mere few hours to gather their belongings from their homes before demolishing buildings and clearing wide avenues through the rubble.

The Israeli army has announced its intention to continue demolishing more buildings in the Tulkarem camps this week as part of an ongoing assault against Palestinian camps in the Occupied West Bank.

The Israeli regime claims these camps are strongholds of Palestinian resistance groups that fight against the Zionist regime.

"We came back to the camp and found our house demolished. No one informed us, no one told us anything," said one of the residents.

The Israeli assault began with a raid on the northern West Bank city of Jenin in January and quickly spread to other cities, including Tulkarem.

According to United Nations statistics, since January, the Israeli regime has displaced 40,000 residents from their homes.

Since October 7, 2023, when the Israeli regime began its genocidal war against Gaza, it has also intensified its occupation of Palestinian lands in the West Bank, including refugee camps.

Palestinians believe the true goal of the regime is to occupy more territory in the West Bank to expand the illegal settlements.

The Israeli Channel 12 television channel revealed on Friday that the West Bank has been witnessing a 40% surge in Israeli settlements since the formation of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's cabinet at the end of 2022.

The number of settlements rose from 128 in the West Bank to 178, accompanied by unprecedented demolitions of Palestinian residences.

The report came just two days after 14 ministers from Netanyahu's right-wing Likud Party, together with Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana, signed a letter urging the Israeli premier to proceed with the immediate annexation of the occupied West Bank.

Between 2013 and 2023, the number of settlers in the West Bank increased by 38%, rising from 374,000 to 517,000, based on data from the West Bank Settlement Council, Yesha.

The Palestinian residents fear that the destruction of the camps will erase their state as refugees and eventually will take away the "right of return" to the land their forebears were forced to leave in 1948 after the Israeli regime was illegally established by occupying the Palestinian lands.
