Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has slammed the Israeli regime over the ongoing "genocide" of innocent Palestinian people in the Gaza Strip.
"We cannot remain indifferent to the genocide carried out by Israel in Gaza, the indiscriminate killing of innocent civilians and the use of hunger as a weapon of war," Lula told leaders gathered at the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday.
The Israeli regime forces genocidal campaign, which began in October 2023, has left at least 57,418 Palestinians dead in Gaza till now, according to tolls published by the UN-trusted Gaza Health Ministry.
So far, BRICS countries have been in disagreement over how strongly to condemn the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
However, one diplomatic source said the final statement at this BRICS summit would convey a strong message to Tel Aviv to end the war in Gaza and agree to a ceasefire deal with the Palestinian side.
In the meantime, US President Donald Trump threatened BRICS member states earlier this year to impose "100% tariffs" on countries that supported an alternative currency to the US dollar.
BRICS, composed of Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, and other developing countries, has expressed frustration with the US's dominant role in the global financial system.
In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced at the BRICS summit nations in October that the US itself was forcing some world nations to part ways with America by "weaponizing" the dollar currency as leverage in Washington's foreign policy.
Putin added that by using the US dollar as a military tool to sabotage other countries' economies to enforce its agenda in international affairs, the US leaders in Washington were making a "big mistake."
"It's not us who refuse to use the dollar," he noted. "But if they don't let us work, what can we do? We are forced to search for alternatives."
