The Palestinian resistance movement of Hamas says it has given a "positive response" to a United States' proposal for a ceasefire in Gaza, announcing its readiness to seriously engage in talks to implement the proposed framework.
Hamas said late on Friday that it had handed over its response to Qatar and Egypt, who are mediating the ceasefire negotiations, according to Al Jazeera TV network.
"The movement has delivered its response to the brotherly mediators, which was characterized by a positive spirit. Hamas is fully prepared, with all seriousness, to immediately enter a new round of negotiations on the mechanism for implementing this framework," the Palestinian resistance movement said in a statement.
Israel has not yet responded to the proposal that calls for a 60-day truce in Gaza's war now in its 21st month.
Hamas announced its agreement three days ahead of a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, where Gaza will be on agenda.
According to Al Jazeera, the proposed ceasefire framework includes a phased release of Israeli prisoners and an increased flow of humanitarian aid into the besieged Gaza Strip. Under the plan, Hamas would release 10 living and 18 deceased Israeli prisoners from the list of 58, beginning with eight live prisoners on the first day of the ceasefire.
Also, all Israeli military operations would stop once the agreement takes effect. Under the proposed framework, negotiations for a permanent ceasefire would begin on day one under the supervision of mediators.
Despite Hamas announcing its positive response to the ceasefire, Israel continued its military operations in Gaza on Saturday, killing 56 Palestinians since the beginning of the day. At least nine of the victims were aid seekers shot dead by the regime's forces.
Israel has been preventing the entry of food, fuel, and other basic supplies into Gaza, including baby milk, as part of a crippling siege in place since March 1 this year.
The restrictions on fuel entry have deteriorated an already dire healthcare system, with hospitals forcing to halt services at some wards.
The Israeli regime has killed at least 57,338 Palestinians and injured 135,957 others since the start of the war on October 7, 2023.
