RAMSTEIN, Germany -- Sweden and Denmark formally joined the Multinational Multi Role Tanker Transport Unit (MMU) on 25 June 2025 during the NATO Summit in The Hague, strengthening strategic air mobility across the Alliance.
With their accession, the MMU now comprises eight partner nations, enabling the expansion of its Airbus A330 MRTT fleet to twelve aircraft by 2029. A new Forward Operating Base in Denmark is also scheduled, enhancing support for northern NATO members.
"The participation of Sweden and Denmark underlines the trust in the MMU project, the willingness to jointly expand capabilities and shows that strategic air mobility in Europe is a combined mission," said Colonel Ludger Bette, Commander of the MMU.
The Airbus A330 MRTT is a modern, multirole aircraft capable of in-flight refuelling, transporting up to 267 troops or 45 tonnes of cargo, and delivering full aeromedical evacuation capabilities. The fleet operates from bases in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and Cologne/Bonn (Germany), with the future addition of Denmark extending operational reach and responsiveness.
Established as a joint NATO initiative, the MMU exemplifies effective multinational cooperation. By pooling resources, the unit enhances strategic reach, resilience, and interoperability among Allies.
As the MMU continues to expand its assets and geographical footprint, it reinforces NATO's ability to swiftly deploy airpower where needed, underpinning the Alliance's collective defence and regional stability.
