NATO Summit: The Alliance gets stronger

Poland - Ministry of National Defence

25.06.2025

- It's a historic event, we have an agreement regarding spending 5% of GDP on armaments, modernization, transformation, military mobility and all the issues connected to the security of the Alliance and our countries. There is no country that opposes this. After discussions lasting to the very end - yesterday we've had a meeting of the ministers of defence and ministers of foreign affairs, exchanges of views, convincing each other - we have an agreement - said Deputy Prime Minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz in the Hague.

On June 24 and 25 Deputy Prime Minister W. Kosiniak-Kamysz was in the Hague, where he took part in the NATO Summit, during which tenuous international situation and member states defence spending were discussed, among other topics.

In the Polish delegation, headed by President Andrzej Duda, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski and Deputy Minister of National Defence Paweł Zalewski were also present.

- I would also like to communicate a number of things important to Poland. Some very good news. German PATRIOT systems will stay at the airport in Jasionka until at least the end of this year. The German Minister of Defence had informed Poland and NATO of the German government's decision in this matter. (...) I have also spoken to the Norwegian Minister of Defence and we have Norway's decision to, once again this year, send F-35 fighters to patrol Polish airspace. There is a growing number of violations in the airspace of different countries over the Baltic Sea, so we need allied support.

- said the Minister of National Defence

- We have also received a decision to send an Australian early warning plane to Poland. AWACS will be stationed in Poland and give us the data needed to ensure our security.

- noted the Deputy Prime Minister

Among other Summit topics were fulfilling NATO countries' capability plans and targets, bolstering NATO institutions such as the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training and Education Centre in Poland, strengthening defence industries or areas connected to cybersecurity. Investments in defensive infrastructure, supporting Ukraine or security of NATO's eastern flank were also discussed.

- Poland's role is very important. We are the third largest NATO army. We have over 200 thousand soldiers. We are also preparing for the division excercises ahead of us. (...) I have invited all our Allies to this excercise, and we already have positive responses from many countries. The United States will be there, as will Turkey - the largest NATO armies, but I have just spoken to the Minister of Defence of Slovakia, (...) Finland, Canada, and almost all of the countries. (...) Freedom needs strength, peace needs strength. (...). A year ago, 8 or 9 NATO states did not meet the 2% of GDP spending requirement, and on a Summit a year after that we have decided that we will be spending 5% - 3,5% on heavy equipment, 1,5% on military infrastructure, cybersecurity. This proves how much has changed over this year. (...) Europe has responded to it, we have a plan from the European Union, constitutions have changed. Germany has changed its constitution, Spain, which had been saying that it will never reach 2%, has already reached that level and will increase it. This shows that our strategy is effective and shared. (...) Poland has its own way of financing spending, both from the budget and from a support fund. We will have European funds, which we have secured during our presidency. 150 billion for a programme to arm Europe. For the first time in history. This is the presidency's largest achievement.

- noted the Deputy Prime Ministrer.

During the two-day NATO Summit, the Deputy Prime Minister has also discussed bilateral and NATO-based cooperation with the Ministers of Defence of Canada, Norway, Finland, Lithuania, Estonia and Australia, as well as the Ministers of the E5 Group - Germany, Great Britain, France, Italy - of which our country is also a member. Poland has also signed a letter of intent regarding increasing the ability to secure stockpiles of resources critical to arms production.
