GEILENKIRCHEN, Germany -- NATO Airborne Warning and Control System (AWACS) aircraft provided air surveillance at the NATO Summit. Flying patrols over sensitive airspace, NATO AWACS provided part of the Allied contribution to guarding the skies over the Summit in The Hague, concluding on 25 June..
During the two-day summit, the support from NATO AWACS and Allied airborne early warning capabilities were critical for the security of this high-profile event. The modified Boeing 707 aircraft are equipped with long-range radar and passive sensors able to detect potential threats, such as aircraft, missiles and drones from a distance of over 400 km.
NATO AWACS provide Allies with a recognized air picture ensuring decision-makers have the best information possible in some of the most complex airspace in the world.
NATO AWACS routinely patrol the skies to assist with security for major public occasions, including NATO and UN Summits, and other high-profile events, such as international football tournaments or the Olympics to provide additional security.
Under Allied Air Command's operational control, the Airborne Early Warning and Control Force operates a fleet of Boeing E-3A 'Sentry' AWACS aircraft. These aircraft provide the Alliance with an immediately available air and maritime surveillance as well as airborne command and control and air battle management capability.
