Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC)

19-06-2025

On World Refugee Day, observed annually on June 20th, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) reaffirms its full solidarity with refugees across the globe. For the OIC, this day serves as a moment to recognize the resilience and dignity of those forcibly displaced due to armed conflicts, natural disasters, and socio-political crises.

The Secretary-General of the OIC, H.E. Mr. Hissein BrahimTaha, extends his compassion and support to the millions of refugees and displaced persons within and beyond OIC Member States. The Secretary-General highlighted that OIC Member States collectively bear a substantial share of the global refugee responsibility, often serving as countries of origin, transit, and settlement. In this regard, he praises the sense of solidarity shown by Member States in hosting and assisting refugees and displaced persons despite many economic and social difficulties. He emphasized the necessity for increased global collaboration to lighten the load on host nations and to guarantee that refugee requirements are met sustainably, inclusively, and with dignity.

H.E. Mr. Taha emphasizes that safeguarding refugees is not only a moral imperative, but also a duty rooted in the Islamic values and enshrined in the OIC rules and principles. In line with its humanitarian mandate, the Secretary-General assured that the OIC will continue to collaborate with all international partners to build long-term solutions to displacement.

On this Day, the OIC Secretary-General's thoughts are especially with the Palestinian refugees who continue facing critical conditions despite the efforts made and the support provided by partners.

On this occasion, He pays special tribute to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) for its invaluable efforts and calls on the donors to provide the necessary resources to allow UNRWA to meet the needs of Palestinian refugees. The OIC also acknowledges the critical work of humanitarian partners, especially UNHCR and OIC institutions, who continue to respond to urgent needs despite numerous challenges.

The OIC is also following with deep concern the developments in the Sahel and Lake Chad regions as millions were forced to flee their homes due to the effects of violence, conflicts, instability, climate change, and food insecurity. The OIC will continue to follow up the outcomes of the donors' conference on Sahel and Lake Chad hosted by KSA on 26 October 2024, which was aimed at mobilizing adequate resources to support refugees and internally displaced persons.

The OIC will continue the to support the Rohingya refugees and urged Myanmar to ensure their safety and security, recognize their fundamental rights, including the right to citizenship, and create conducive conditions for the voluntary, safe, dignified, and sustainable return of refugees and displaced among the Rohingya to their nation.

The OIC calls upon the concerned countries, international partners, and all stakeholders to strengthen burden-sharing mechanisms and uphold the rights and dignity of refugees everywhere. Guided by its Charter, the Islamic values of compassion and justice, and the collective responsibility of the international community, the OIC remains steadfast in its commitment to advocating for and supporting refugees and displaced persons until they are able to return to their homes in safety and dignity.
