The President: The friendship between Lithuania and Poland extends beyond terms of office
President of the Republic of Lithuania
June 03, 2025
On Tuesday, President Gitanas Nausėda met with outgoing Polish President Andrzej Duda at the Lithuanian seaside. The leaders discussed the outcomes of bilateral cooperation between Lithuania and Poland, the regional security situation, support for Ukraine, preparations for the NATO Summit in The Hague, and shared interests within the European Union.
The Lithuanian leader emphasized that over the past six years, relations between Lithuania and Poland have reached their highest point. Meetings between the two Presidents have been frequent and consistent, occurring around 60 times in various formats. According to President Gitanas Nausėda, this reflects not only the excellent dynamics of bilateral relations, but also the trust and shared values between the leaders of both countries.
Gitanas Nausėda noted that this period has been marked by significant joint achievements: strengthening NATO's eastern flank, securing Lithuania's synchronization with continental Europe, providing steadfast support for Ukraine, and preserving historical memory.
President Gitanas Nausėda expressed his appreciation for Poland's role as Lithuania's most important economic and trading partner. He highlighted particularly close cooperation in the high-tech sector, including life sciences, renewable energy, telecommunications, financial technologies, and cyber security.
The two leaders also discussed further measures to enhance defense, such the East Shield and Baltic Defense Line projects, as well as NATO's rotational air defense model in the Baltic states. The President underlined that Lithuania and Poland remain responsible allies, and ahead of the NATO Summit in The Hague, their stance on defense spending remains clear: member states need to allocate at least 5% of GDP to defense.
President Gitanas Nausėda stressed that both Lithuania and Poland are among the largest and most consistent supporters of Ukraine. According to the Head of State, this support is a long-term investment in European security and in a rules-based international order. He emphasized that a just peace must rest on the aggressor's accountability—not on territorial compromises.
The meeting also addressed the need to tighten sanctions against Russia, enhance EU support for the protection of the Union's eastern borders, and reinforce resilience to disinformation and falsification of history. The President noted that safeguarding historical memory will be one of Lithuania's key priorities during its Presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2027.
The Lithuanian leader expressed gratitude to Polish President Andrzej Duda for a constructive and close partnership, as well as for his personal dedication over the years of collaboration. Gitanas Nausėda underlined that Andrzej Duda has been a reliable ally and a sincere friend, with whom agreements extended well beyond formal bilateral relations.
"I have no doubt that the friendship between our nations goes beyond terms of office and will continue to grow stronger," said the Lithuanian leader.
