MANILA -- Two China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels are now tailing the "Atin Ito" civilian mission bound for Pag-asa Island, a ranking Philippine Navy (PN) official said on Tuesday.

"On the 'Atin Ito', they started sailing early this morning. The last report from the group was that they were being tailed by two CCG vessels," PN spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said in a press briefing.

The group departed from El Nido, Palawan early Tuesday morning aboard the training ship, T/S Kapitan Felix Oca, which measures 114.55 meters and has a width of 16 meters.

The group is expected to arrive in Pag-asa Island early Wednesday, where it will hold a concert aside from distributing supplies to fisherfolk in the vicinity.

Trinidad, meanwhile, said the PN, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other maritime agencies are prepared to extend support to the civilian mission.

Trinidad also maintained that the Western Command is monitoring the activity and that appropriate contingencies are in place should the AFP be required to respond.

As of their latest monitoring, the PN official said there is a "normal presence" of Chinese maritime militia and CCG ships near Pag-asa Island.

"There's been no significant increase. May presence pa rin doon but (there is a presence there but there is) no significant increase in the numbers," the PN official said.

Also, Trinidad said there is no indication that CCG or other Chinese maritime forces would conduct aggressive actions against the "Atin Ito" mission. (PNA)
